Satire

Satire is the holding up to ridicule of human vice and folly.

What are the targets of Shakespeare's satire in MND?

How does he ridicule these targets?

Be precise in your answers.

  1. In MND shakespeare uses alot of irony in the way he wrote MND and uses the litaracy device satire to show that love isnt always predictable and can make you do crazy things you have never dreamt of doing hencing the title "midsummers night dream"
showing that we will all take take chaneces when it comes to love and without a risk there is no gain such as when Helena's runs after Demetrius and Demetrius chasing Hermia who he knows is in love with Lysander.
and the Love which is not working well for Hippolyta and Theseus. Oberon and Titania who have a unstable relationship
which add the humour to the whole story of MND which sorts of mocks people in love because they will do anything to be in love or be loved
( i really dint undertsand it)

  2. dont understand but ill try my best.

in midsummers night dream shakespeare uses the litaracy device satire to show that love doesnt always work out how you want it to and make you do things you wouldnt do for anybody else. it shows this in the play as everyone is chasing eachother and the fairys have to use a potion to match two people up. without the potion its like a chain of love which doesnt work out because nobody loves eachother

  3. I dont really understand either:

but what i got from it that the way shakespear used satire to show the houmour in MSD of how they used a love potion to make them fall in love with each other but it actually turns horribly wrong and makes them fall in love with a different person . And how he uses it when he turns bottem into a donkey and makes sly jokes out of it during the script

  4. In midsomers night dream Shakespere uses satire to create an effect of irrony and comfort. It is ironic as each character is in love with the person that loves someone else. Dramatic irony is also used throughout the play as we, the audience know what is happening in the play more than the characters involved do. It creates comfort as we see that the play is just like real life where people have feelings for one another but are not always reciprocated. It also creates humour as the fairies are trying to mix the characters up in the play together and make them fall in love and this would never happen in reall life.

Sorry if this is a bad/wrong answer, i didnt understand but i tried!

  5. i dont really understand the question properly so ive only wrote a bit.

I agree with rachels comment. It does create a lot of irony throughtout what we have read so far. I also think that Shakespeare uses satire to create humour between the faires. I think he uses satire to grab the audiences attention and to make the play more effective.

  6. okay like the others I didn't get the task (in my case at all) - but after reading the other's comments I quite understood what to do but don't really know what to add so I just tried to respond on the others.

I really like Jess' and Rachel's comments about the humor in MSD and about how love potion affects the play ( about how they fall in love with a wrong person)
I also think Lewis' and Blessing comments about love is not predictable and it doesn't always work out how u want it is true in what we read in MSD ..

  7. The things I found quite satirical in MND was the theme of love, the amateur actors and the idea of arranged marriage.

also, and I'm not sure about this but, happy endings as well, because MND ends with one of the characters, Demetrius, still in a love trance. so it's kind of like Shakespeare's saying not everyone story ends happily!

  9. I agree with what Blessing said at the beginning- how people are mocked because of how they act when in love. Puck even says "Lord what fools these mortals be!", poking fun at the audience as well as the characters.
Also, Shakespeare might have been mocking other plays/theatre/actors with the terrible performance of the amateur actors at the wedding. Maybe he was making a point as to how similar all plays are (since the Pyramus and Thisby one and MND are like Romeo and Juliet- young couple plan to elope) and how the audiences are entertained by simple things/themes/characters. Maybe he was challenging this by having an intricate plot (stories within stories) and basically confusing the audience (who I'm guessing weren't very well educated?).

  10. Shakespeare uses literacy devices such as irony as the characters are all in love with people who are not in love with them but different characters within the play. Humour is also used between characters such as Puck and the fairys which makes it effective to the audience as they are not seen by the other characters in the play and are almost like a second audience.
