MND - Characterisation

OK...

The project has started.

Each week there will be an MND related task on the blog.  Everyone needs to do all of them.

Let's start with characterisation.

Here is a list of key characters from MND.

Theseus
Hippolyta
Helena
Hermia
Demetrius
Lysander
Titania
Oberon
Nick Bottom
Peter Quince
Egeus
The Mechanicals

Everyone take one and research into the character(s).

Task

Post a paragraph of prose...your findings.

Post five adjectives that you think best describe the charatcer.  If you had only five words to give to an actor to direct them in their performance, what would they be?

Go!

  1. theseus he is the duke of Athens the is a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazonian queen, Hippolyta, and set simultaneously in the woodland, and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon.

  2. Titania

The beautiful queen of the fairies, Titania resists the attempts of her husband, Oberon, to make a knight of the young Indian prince that she has been given. Titania’s brief, potion-induced love for Nick Bottom, whose head Puck has transformed into that of an ass, yields the play’s foremost example of the contrast motif.

Proud, deceiving, pretty, dominant, strong minded

  3. The mechanicals are a group of Athenian craftsmen who have been chosen to perform a play at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Their rehearsals provide continual comedy, as they lose an actor, much of the plot, and all sense of proportion.

don't really know which adjectives to choose ..

  4. Nick Bottom

He is a self obsessed actor who believes he is superior to the others, when in fact he is not at all. he is also overconfident and unaware what people think about him, especially when Titania's eyes get covered in love potion causing her to fall in love with him which doesn't strike him as odd, while the whole time his own head has been that of an ass.

    delusional, conceited, ridiculous, oblivious, foolish.

  5. Helena

Helena is one of the iconic four young lovers in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and is a very desperate woman. She is generally interpreted as being tall, slim and blonde - her best friend Hermia calls her a "painted maypole" during an argument. Although she does not see herself as attractive, she is just as pretty as Hermia. Helena comes from a rich family in Athens and, with regards to status, is towards the higher end of the social hierarchy.

  6. Demetrius

A young man of Athens, initially in love with Hermia and ultimately in love with Helena. Demetrius’s obstinate pursuit of Hermia throws love out of balance among the quartet of Athenian youths and precludes a symmetrical two-couple arrangement.

    Straightforward, mean and hypocritical.

  7. Lysander

is the lover of Egeus's daughter. Unfortunately, Egeus does not approve of Lysander and would prefer for his daughter to marry a man named Demetrius. This results in Lysander and Hermia eloping into the forest to be together.

  8. Hermia

Hermia is the daughter of Egeus and a young woman of Athens. She wants to marry Lysander and NOT Demetrius, as her father has arranged. Demetrius has feelings for her, but she does not love him back. This character is is self-conscious about her height; constantly envying Helena, her childhood friend, for her height. When Egeus gives Hermia an ultimatum, she decides to elope with Lysander, rather than marry Demetrius or wallow in a nunnery for the rest of her life. At the end of the play, Hermia and Lysander are left alone to live together because Demetrius realises he actually loves Helena, who has secretly adored him all along.

    Hermia is:
Head strong, hopelessly romantic, maybe naive/foolish as she just runs of with Lysander, not a typical Athenian woman? i.e she has a mind of her own and does not live under her father's thumb and...short:).

  9. nick bottom

He is humourous and s often mischevious and subtlethe comedy surrounding the overconfident weaver.Nick botttom is hilariously overt. Central figure of the subplot involving the craftsmen's production. Extraordinary abilities he thinks he is important. He is totally unaware of his ridiculousness. His speech is always dramatic and self aggrandizing and believes everyone takes him seriously.

    Disillusional, overconfident, self centred,hilarious, overt

  10. Oberon

king of the fairies his personality has two sides as he is bitter-sweet.As a benevolent ruler of the spirit world, he also brings blessing of peace and health to the future families of the newly-weds and also as he fights with Titania over the boy but it is said that he only did this to prove his authority over Titania

The queen of the fairies. She has a changling Indian son and refuses to give Oberon this child that he wants. Titania has a brief, potion-induced love for Nick Bottom which is soon ended when Puck changes his head to an ass.
